One of the more important business innovations undertaken recently by agricultural water districts and mutual ditch and irrigation companies in the Rocky Mountain region is the delivery of raw irrigation water to rural subdivisions for landscape use, in addition to traditional irrigation water deliveries to farms.
The term “dual systems” is often used to describe this business practice. These systems are characterized by a residential parcel of land or lot receiving water from two separate underground piped water systems. One piped water system conveys treated water from conventional municipal supply systems, while the other piped system conveys untreated (irrigation) water from the agricultural water suppliers, homeowners’ association, developer, or special district.
The pressurized piped system for the untreated water to a residential parcel or lot is the “secondary water supply.” This term is used frequently in other areas of the West where well-developed pressurized dual water systems are already in operation.
